I. With the Dawn of your time
If the ice ages receded and the first human teams roamed the humid valleys of the Cantabrian Sea, the lands we now get in touch with Euskal Herria have been previously a refuge. From the caves of Santimamiñe, Ekain, Isturitz, and Aitzbitarte, nameless arms left bison, horses, and symbols that still appear to resonate today.
They have been hunter-gatherer peoples, adapted to rugged mountains, swift rivers, and coasts full of fish.
Around millennia, these groups settled, cultivated the land, elevated livestock, and formed communities that, While various, shared cultural traits that might outlast entire empires.
II. The Vascones, Caristii, Varduli, and Autrigones
Through the Iron Age, Roman chroniclers outlined many peoples:
• Vascones in Navarre and parts of Gipuzkoa along with the French Basque State (Iparralde)
• Caristii in Biscay and Álava
• Varduli in Gipuzkoa
• Autrigones in western Biscay
These were not centralized kingdoms, but fairly tribal confederations. They practiced livestock farming, transhumant herding, and Atlantic trade.
Rome arrived, but hardly ever totally subdued them. The mountains, forests, and local resistance meant that Romanization was constrained: streets, bridges, agricultural villas… though the language and many customs continued by themselves route.
III. Between Empires: The Early Center Ages
Once the tumble of Rome, these lands lay concerning two worlds: the Frankish and the Visigothic.
Throughout this time, a name emerged that would resonate for hundreds of years: Vasconia.
• In Navarre, the Vascones structured by themselves all around Pamplona.
• From the Northern Basque Nation (Iparralde), the Duchy of Vasconia stretched within the Garonne River on the Pyrenees.
• In Biscay, Gipuzkoa, and Álava, local lineages preserved autonomy amidst the mountains and valleys.
The Vikings attacked the coast; the Franks attempted to manage the Pyrenean passes; the Visigoths and later on the Muslims clashed over the Ebro frontier.
Even so the Basque communities survived, adapting with out shedding their identity.
IV. The Kingdom of Pamplona / Kingdom of Navarre
While in the 9th century, the Kingdom of Pamplona was born, which might later turn into the Kingdom of Navarre.
For hundreds of years, it had been a critical player in peninsular and European politics.
